Alright, fabulous hot messes, it’s that magical time of year again—the moment when we swap out our breezy floral summer dresses for cozy knits and chic boots. But before you dive headfirst into pumpkin-spiced (I prefer just pumpkin not spice) everything, let’s talk about something that’ll make you feel even more accomplished than baking that perfect pie: decluttering your closet!
Yes, I know, the word *declutter* can send shivers down your spine, or give you anxiety because of the decision fatigue of what to keep and what to give away, but trust me—this is going to be fun, educational, and dare I say it, life-changing. We’re diving into Amy Smilovic’s Pyramid Method to give your wardrobe the ultimate makeover. And as we say bye-bye to summer and embrace the fall vibes, I’ve got some must-have tools from Amazon that’ll help you get your closet in shape, plus some tips on turning those pre-loved pieces into extra cash. Ready? Let’s do this!
First, if you haven’t read my blog about this method, let’s get familiar with the Pyramide Method, created by the fashion genius, Amy Smilovic, the mastermind behind TIBI. The idea is simple yet brilliant: each outfit should balance three elements—Classic(Basics), Chill(In & Out), and Modern(Have to Have). These three points of the triangle will help you create looks that are stylish, relaxed, and timeless. So, when decluttering, ask yourself: Does this piece fit into one of these categories? If not, it might be time to break up with this piece and give it a chance to be with somebody else.
– Classic: Think timeless pieces like a tailored blazer, a white button-down, or those perfect-fitting jeans, those basic pieces that you can always count on.
– Chill: These are your easy, laid-back pieces—like that cozy oversized sweater or your favorite sneakers. These pieces are the ones you won’t wear all the time but have a special place in your heart because of how they make you feel when you wear them.
– Modern: Anything that feels current, fresh, and on-trend. Think statement accessories, bold patterns, or a trendy silhouette. These are those pieces that you fall in love with as soon as you see them, they are odd, funky, and eclectic, and you can’t live without them whether you wear them or not.
Now that you’ve got the Pyramide Method down, it’s time to tackle that closet. Start by pulling out everything—yes, everything—from your wardrobe. Make sure to send your partners, fur babies, and kids if you have any away for a whole-day event. Plan it for them if necessary, this is your ME TIME, this is self-caring. This is the time to get real with yourself. That sundress you haven’t worn in two years? It’s time to let it go. Those sandals that have seen better days? Sayonara!
Here’s where the magic happens: separate your items into three piles—*Keep, Donate/Sell, and Store*.
– Keep: These are your go-to items that fit into the Pyramide Method and make you feel like a million bucks.
– Donate/Sell: Got pieces that don’t quite fit your fall vibe but are too fabulous to toss? Consider donating them to a local charity or selling them online. Poshmark and Whatnot are great platforms for turning those pre-loved treasures into extra cash, and if you want to donate and make some cash at the same time try Trashie or Thredup where they, sell, donate, recycle, and even turn your clothes into new fibers to create something new. The best part you get rewarded for donating —hello, new fall wardrobe fund!
– Store: If there are summer items you adore and can’t bear to part with, store them away for next year. Just make sure they’re in good shape, and you’re not holding onto them just for nostalgia’s sake. If you are planning to store them, make sure to get bins where you can fit a lot of stuff like these massive sturdy bins that I currently use to store my whole closet while I live at my parents or these collapsable clear bins where you can keep an eye of where everything is. If you are like me you like to layer and make some of your summer clothes work for the fall, then get a clothing rack to hang all those clothes that are transition pieces that you can remember to use and layer them up. Plus a clothing rack is always useful and can be great home decor
With your summer clutter cleared, it’s time to get your fall wardrobe in tip-top shape. Here’s where a few Amazon must-haves come into play:
– Velvet Hangers: These slim, non-slip hangers not only save space but also keep your clothes in perfect condition. Trust me, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without them. I can’t live without them.
– Clear Storage Bins: Perfect for storing those off-season pieces. Opt for clear bins so you can easily see what’s inside when next summer rolls around. A must-have that I use all the time.
– Shelf Dividers: If you’re like me and have a love affair with sweaters, these dividers will keep your knits perfectly stacked and easy to find. I haven’t tried them yet, but according to my research, they are extremely helpful especially if you like to fold and stack your clothes.
– Over-the-Door Shoe Organizer: Boots and fall shoes galore! This organizer will keep your footwear collection tidy and easily accessible. I have to be honest I am not a huge fan of this organizer, mainly because I wear platform shoes and they don’t fit in the show holes. LOL
Now that your closet is decluttered and organized, it’s time to fill in the gaps with some fall must-haves. But remember, we’re sticking to the Triangle Method, so each piece you add should fit into one of the three categories.
As you shop, think about versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. A sleek pair of ankle boots, a cozy turtleneck, and a statement belt could be all you need to elevate your fall style game. And with the extra cash from selling your pre-loved items, you can treat yourself to a few new goodies without breaking the bank.
You’ve done the hard work; now it’s all about maintaining that gorgeous, organized closet. Make it a habit to do a quick seasonal sweep—store away what you won’t wear and bring forward those key pieces that align with the Pyramide Method. And if you find yourself wavering on an item, remember: if it doesn’t make you feel like the badass you are, it doesn’t belong in your closet.
Decluttering isn’t just about getting rid of stuff—it’s about creating a space that reflects who you are and who you want to be. By using Amy Smilovic’s Pyramide Method, you’re not only streamlining your wardrobe but also curating a collection of pieces that truly make you feel like the best version of yourself. So grab those velvet hangers, get organized, and embrace the fall season with style and confidence. Because let’s be real—you’re a hot mess, but you’re also fabulous, and your closet should be too!
